(From the 7/26 issue of Fosters)

New Hampshire residents seem to be coming to the stark realization that Washington D.C. is broken, which has given rise to the tea party movement. Our “representatives” there don’t listen to us, continue to increase spending at an alarming rate, and pass bills without even reading them. What not as many people realize is that our “representatives” in Concord are taking a similar approach to governing New Hampshire. Concord has become the new D.C.

Increased spending at rates faster than inflation is the norm now for both D.C. and Concord. The state legislature has increased spending by over 25% in the last four years alone! In the last decade, state spending has nearly doubled, yet the population in New Hampshire has not significantly increased. With 80 new taxes and fees and the worst corporate taxes in the nation, we are certainly not getting our money’s worth. The property tax burden, combined with the collapse in the real estate market, has put people in the position where they can’t afford their taxes but they can’t afford to sell either. Concord has contributed to this by downshifting costs to the towns while removing their share of revenues such as the meals and rooms tax.

Thankfully, unlike the Federal government, New Hampshire is required by law to balance its budget, so we can’t push our spending off onto future generations. Nevertheless, while closing so-called loopholes in order to create the new LLC tax, the legislature opened up loopholes to allow them to borrow to cover operating costs. Between bonding school building aid, restructuring debt, and borrowing from UNH, the state’s debt service ratio has jumped up to around 8%, the highest in history. Like D.C., Concord’s misguided representatives plan to borrow their way out of this recession.

Another disturbing trend in Concord has been the increasing lack of transparency. We are used to laws being passed quickly without hearings and without even being read in D.C., but the process in New Hampshire has traditionally been very open. Yet in the previous session, we saw an LLC tax passed in the middle of the night with no public hearing and enacted retroactively, creating a huge uproar in the small business community. This year we saw a rise in the use of rule-making outside of the legislative process to attempt to create rules that had previously failed to pass in the legislature. In the case of the gun ban in the State House, the attempt succeeded, while the attempt to restrict home schooling through the rules failed, thanks to the vigilance of the home schooling community.

Finally, we have come to realize that our “representatives” in D.C. have turned a deaf ear on “we the people”. Despite overwhelming opposition from the people, they pushed through the bailouts and TARP. Despite the majority of Americans rejecting so-called health care reform since it did nothing to reduce costs, they went ahead pushed it through anyway. The Democrat majorities that control Concord went completely along with ObamaCare, and Gov. Lynch refused to stand up for the residents of New Hampshire. In the New Hampshire Senate, Republicans offered an amendment that would have had New Hampshire refuse the mandates in ObamaCare, but the Democratic majority voted against it along party lines, with the current Senator in District 4 leading the charge.

It’s incredibly sad to see New Hampshire taking its lead from D.C. My vision for New Hampshire would be to set the example for the rest of the country by pursuing the traditional New Hampshire values that made our state and our country so great — limited government, local control, personal freedom, and personal responsibility. It’s time for new leadership in Concord that will bring this state and this country back in the right direction, rather than following D.C. down a path to failure and bankruptcy.

Jim Forsythe
Republican Candidate
Senate District 4

I am writing to strongly urge voters in NH Senate District 4 (Alton, Barnstead, Belmont, Gilford, Gilmanton, Laconia, New Durham, Strafford and Tilton) to vote for Jim Forsythe in the Sept 14th Republican Primary.

(From the Laconia Citizen 7/22)

I am writing to strongly urge voters in NH Senate District 4 (Alton, Barnstead, Belmont, Gilford, Gilmanton, Laconia, New Durham, Strafford and Tilton) to vote for Jim Forsythe in the Sept 14th Republican Primary.

As a former State Representative and NH Public Utilities Commissioner, I know firsthand how complicated the issues that are dealt with in Concord can be. Jim has what it takes not only to understand but to resolve these issues. He has a PHD in Aerospace Engineering, is a former Air Force Officer where he served as a pilot and a professor and has successfully run his own business.

As a fellow resident of Strafford, I have worked with Jim in his capacity as the Chair of the Strafford Taxpayers Association. He has shown he is willing to put in the time to understand the problems facing towns like Strafford and to work hard to find solutions.

Jim realizes we must take back our state from the big spending, nanny state liberals who are now in charge. He knows we simply cannot continue the double digit increases in spending without new large tax increases. Once in the Senate, Jim will work to decrease state spending and the size and reach of the state government while fighting any and all new taxes.

Jim understands the concerns with ever growing government are not limited to just tax increases but also include the loss of freedoms. He will work to stop the state intrusions and controls into areas where it just does not belong. He is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment to both the US and state constitutions and will make sure that all law abiding citizens of NH will not have their right to keep and bear arms infringed.

This is a critical time for NH. We must stop the growth of government and the associated loss of freedom now. It is time to take our state back. I know no better way of doing that than to elect Jim Forysthe to the Senate. So please join me on Sept 14th in voting for Jim Forsythe for Sate Senate from District 4.

Hon. Michael Harrington

Strafford

Forsythe Signs Americans for Prosperity Pledge

Concord, NH – Republican State Senate District 4 candidate Jim Forsythe today signed the Americans for Prosperity Pledge to cut taxes and fees (and oppose a sales and/or income tax), cut spending, cut the size of government, and uphold both the N.H. and U.S. Constitutions.

“This was an easy pledge to sign, since it is a desire to uphold the value of limited government that motivated me to run. Business taxes in N.H. have increased dramatically, especially with the LLC tax. Unless we restore the N.H. Advantage of lower taxes, we are likely to see unemployment continue to rise. Additionally, property tax payers need relief – the state must stop passing un-Constitutional unfunded mandates and downshifting costs to the local property taxpayer.” said Forsythe.

Forsythe continued, “There are many things the legislature can do to reduce spending while maintaining vital services. We should pass school choice reforms that have been proven in many other states to improve quality while reducing costs. The state should be buying our power competitively off the New England power pool for a potential 20% savings. Public employees should be switched to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) as has become increasingly popular in the private sector. All these reforms use the competitive nature of the free market to reduce costs while potentially improving the quality of service. If elected to the State Senate, I pledge to reduce spending and taxes in New Hampshire, which will return our state to the prosperity it deserves.”

FORSYTHE FILES FOR STATE SENATE SEAT WITH FAMILY BY HIS SIDE
Candidate said the prospect for his own children’s future inspired his candidacy

LACONIA, N.H.—With his family by his side for support and inspiration, conservative Republican Jim Forsythe filed his candidacy for New Hampshire’s fourth-district State Senate seat today at the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office in Concord.

“It’s true that many candidates file for office with their family and friends by their side, but to me, having my wife and children with me reflects the deep-rooted concern I have about my family’s future,” Forsythe said. “If the current state Legislature’s excessive borrow-and-spend behavior continues much longer, my children would have to work harder than me to be able to afford an equally prosperous life. When I first realized this, I immediately knew I had to run for this office so I could directly influence policies that would improve their future.”

When Forsythe filed for office today, he submitted a petition with more than 100 signatures from supporters around State Senate District 4, while his wife Sue of 20 years, his daughter Kate (14) and his son Connor (12) looked on. The candidate said his family, friends and supporters have been “an inspiration” as he seeks the authority “to help restore the New Hampshire Advantage” through a seat in the State Senate.

“The next Legislature has to focus on spending cuts so it can start paying down the debt built up in the last six years and cut taxes and fees that have crippled families and businesses and stifled the growth of private-sector jobs,” Forsythe said. “I’m committed to making the needed spending cuts to ensure prosperity for not only my children, but also for the entire state. I’m also committed to changes that will restore parents’ control over their children’s education and free-market reforms to lower the cost of health care.”
